Welcome to Hemyock Castle

Long an important historic centre, today Hemyock Castle offers a warm welcome for Visitors, Schools, and Groups; and comfortable Self Catering Holiday Accommodation. Each carefully modernized holiday cottage retains its original charm. Good road links make this an excellent touring centre for Devon, Exmoor and Dartmoor. There is a wide variety of facilities and attractions, locally and within easy travelling distance, to interest a wide range of tastes: Whatever the weather.

Although situated in the heart of Hemyock village, the castle site is screened by trees and walls so surprisingly little can be seen from the road. The whole site is enclosed by substantial walls, fences and gates.

Hemyock Castle is set in the Culm Valley amongst the now tranquil Blackdown Hills in Devon England, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty just a few miles from the M5 Motorway and Taunton.

The site is a scheduled Ancient Monument, open to the public on Bank Holiday Mondays (2 to 5 pm) between Easter and September. Schools and groups are welcome at any time, by prior arrangement.

The comfortable self catering holiday accommodation within the castle grounds is open all year. Each holiday cottage has been carefully converted and modernized, preserving its original character and charm. Outside the popular "high season," spring and autumn are particularly attractive for a quieter holiday.

Bicentenary of Britain's 1807 Anti-Slavery Law.

General Simcoe's and Canada's Role.

Last year, there were many commemorations of Britain's 1807 law which outlawed the trans-Atlantic slave trade. However, Canada's vital role as a safe haven for escaped slaves is now less well known: Read more about Canada's 1793 abolition of slavery.

Tsunami, Sri Lanka, 26th December 2004: Prem's Village Fund.

Many visitors to Hemyock Castle have met "Prem," staying at the Castle while studying at SCAT and working part-time at Musgrove Park NHS Hospital in Taunton.

Hambantota, her coastal region of Southern Sri Lanka, was badly affected by the Asian Tsunami. Many thousands of people were killed, fishing boats were smashed, houses and businesses wrecked, and fertile farming land was inundated with sea water.

Prem survived and moved to higher ground, looking after her family and some tourists. Since then, Prem has been working hard as a volunteer, effectively using friends' generous donations to help the survivors to help themselves: Read more about Prem's Village Fund for Tsunami Relief.

Special Off Season Attractions:

Devon and the West Country are well known as popular summer holiday destinations. However, for a quieter holiday outside the main season, Devon has much to offer.

Devon's mild climate and traditional farming practices have led to a profusion of wild flowers and trees in the country lanes, fields, and woodlands of the Black Down Hills. The spring flowers are especially attractive.

Autumn brings autumn tints: The countryside becomes an endless variety of greens and browns. Many towns hold spectacular illuminated carnivals.

The wide variety of cultural, entertainment and sports facilities in the Blackdowns or within easy travelling distance include popular surfing beaches. Off season, when there is more room, special beach sports such as kite surfing are popular. Local firms can supply all special equipment and training. (To hire or buy.)
